Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis
Although hypnosis has had a lot of attention
as a self-help modality, a means of “mind control” and even
entertainment as ia stage show, few people realize that it has
a role as a therapy recognized by medical authorities. This
wasn’t always the case but certainly is now.
A lot of western medicine’s approach to
illness deals with the physical and minimizes the psychological
approach. This is a false separation, and the recognition of
that has led to a resurgence of interest in what is sometimes
referred to as mind-body medicine.
Hypnosis can be one aspect of this
comprehensive approach to a person’s well being.
Since it is estimated that over 80% of the
problems people see their family doctor for have stress as one
part of the underlying cause it’s not surprising that an
intervention such as hypnosis might clinical value.
As with all treatments, the medical
community holds itself to a high standard of evidence.
While most of us would be willing to try a
treatment that is generally safe, such as hypnosis , to see if
it appears to work, medical experts demand what they refer to
as clinical trials. That is treating one group of patients with
the treatment being tested and another group of similar
patients without it and seeing which group does better.
Areas of Research
Hypnosis naturally lends itself as an
adjunct treatment for many psychological disorders such as
depressions and various phobias.
However it also is being evaluated as a
treatment for such traditional medical problems as pain, high
blood pressure, recovery from surgery, childbirth and so
on.
Although we should welcome research into the
many uses of hypnosis, the downside of this is that it takes
time, lots of time.
Many years can pass between the initial idea
for a study, its planning and design, its implementation and
finally seeing its results. Meanwhile, people may be missing
out on the benefits hypnosis has to offer.

hypnosis in a scientific there’s no need to deny your self the
